Although the real carnival will officially start in the second week of february, the street carnival in Rio has already begun. The street parade called “blocos” are free of charge and is where people dress up in costumes, make out with strangers (if you want) and celebrate the festivities on the street. Tomorrow there will be more than a dozen blocos all around the city and there will be a bloco to attend every day until the last day of Carnival. Some of the more traditional blocos Like “cordao do boitata” have existed for several decades. Some Cariocas claim that this is the best carnival, before all the tourists arrive for the real deal in february. Most Blocos actually start on schedrule (yes its true), so get there in time.
